Jan J. Smith

Jan J. Smith sees the God designed beauty of the world and enjoys the challenge of capturing that beauty on canvas. A third-generation Oklahoman, inheriting artistic talents from her grandmother, Jan has always loved beauty and creativity. Early in her painting career, she became a teacher of tole painting, selling her art in Ocean Springs, MS and the Sunburst Gallery in Oklahoma City, OK.

I’m hoping to catch the wonder and emotions of something that has delighted me in order to share it with others so that they, too, can see and feel something they may have overlooked.

Jan put painting “on the back burner” while she and her neurosurgeon husband raised their 3 sons. However, during this time, she created stain glass art and founded a thriving women’s accessory business, Designer Accessories, showing in the Dallas and New York City apparel markets. Now, she has returned to her love of art and has become passionate about oil painting, marveling at nature and how colors look next to each other. Jan’s painting style is impressionistic realism primarily in landscapes, still life, portraits and flowers using vibrant, beautiful colors causing the viewer to experience joy and contentment.

Jan has studied under noted Oklahoma artists Judy McCombs, Kelli Folsom and Dennis Parker. She has continued to learn under Daniel Keys, Kathy Anderson, Gregg Kreutz, Suchitra Bhosle and Leonard Wren. Jan has been influenced by the work of many great artists; Edgar Payne, Jim Wilcox, Richard Schmid and David Leffel. Along with commissions, her artwork has consistently sold in the Oklahoma Artists Invitational Art Shows, The Art Auction-OKA+Schools, Lankford & Lankford, The Studio Gallery, The Art Group, La Baguette, the Mercy Gala, Our Favorite Place, Eufaula, OK and has been seen in many other Oklahoma City venues.  Jan ‘s art is currently available in her home studio, Jan J. Smith Fine Art.

One of the original founders of Oklahoma Artists Invitational art shows, Jan has received the Founding Artists award for showing in ten or more OAI art shows. She and two other artists have been in every OAI show since 2010. She serves as the president of Oklahoma Artists Invitational, LLC and facilitates producing several successful upscale art shows a year.
